Getting there

Agartala is the capital of Tripura, a city with a unique blend of Bengali and tribal cultures. The Ujjayanta Palace (the royal palace of the Manikya dynasty) is the most iconic building — a 19th-century Indo-Saracenic palace set in 34 acres of gardens. Agartala is also known for the Neermahal (the Water Palace in the middle of Rudrasagar Lake), and the Chaturdasha Devata Temple (a 14-deity temple). The city has a distinct northeastern charm with clean streets and a relaxed pace. The tribal communities of Tripura have a rich cultural tradition of dance and music. It is a great destination for student backpackers looking for an affordable trip. The area is well-connected to major Indian cities by road, rail and air.

Why go

Cultural

Ujjayanta Palace is the former royal palace built by Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya in 1901 — the palace has a three-storey structure with a central dome, Italian marble floors and a museum with artifacts from the Manikya dynasty. Neermahal (50 km from Agartala) is the Water Palace built in the middle of Rudrasagar Lake in 1930 — accessible by boat (₹200-300). The Chaturdasha Devata Temple is a 14-domed temple with 14 deities.

Cultural

The Tripura State Museum (inside Ujjayanta Palace) has sculptures, coins, manuscripts and tribal artifacts. The tribal villages around Agartala showcase the lifestyle of the Tripuri, Reang, Jamatia and Chakma communities. The Hojagiri dance is a traditional dance of the Tripuri tribe. The Bengalis form the majority of the city's population — the city has a Bengali cultural flavour.
