Getting there
Agra is home to the Taj Mahal, the most famous building in India and one of the seven wonders of the world. The city on the Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh is a mandatory stop on any North India itinerary. The Taj Mahal at sunrise is the single iconic image of India, and seeing it in person lives up to the expectation. Agra also has the massive Agra Fort, the elegant Itmad-ud-Daulah (often called the Baby Taj), and the Mehtab Bagh garden across the river. The city itself is crowded and chaotic, but the monuments are extraordinary. Agra is a very easy day trip from Delhi by the Gatimaan or Shatabdi Express trains, though an overnight stay lets you see the Taj at sunrise and at sunset light.

Why go
The Taj Mahal is the reason the world comes to Agra. Built by Shah Jahan between 1631 and 1648 as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, it is a perfectly symmetrical marble tomb set in a formal Mughal garden. The changing light through the day — white at dawn, warm honey at sunset, silvery under the full moon — makes it a living monument that looks different in every season. The Agra Fort, a UNESCO site 2 km away, is a red-sandstone fortress with palaces, mosques and audience halls. The combination of the Taj and the Fort makes Agra one of the most densely concentrated heritage destinations in the world. The nearby Fatehpur Sikri, 40 km away, is a perfectly preserved Mughal ghost city.
How to reach
Agra is the easiest day trip from Delhi. The Gatimaan Express takes 100 minutes (₹900-1,000 chair car) and the Shatabdi Express takes about 2 hours. Both depart from Delhi's Hazrat Nizamuddin or New Delhi station. Check live timings on IRCTC or a train app before booking. Overnight trains in sleeper class cost ₹200-400 and take 3-4 hours. Buses from Delhi ISBT to Agra cost ₹300-500 and take 4-5 hours. The nearest airport is Agra's Kheria Airport with limited flights from Delhi and other cities. From Agra Cantonment railway station, the Taj Mahal is ₹150-200 by auto (15 minutes). The Yamuna Expressway from Delhi makes Agra a 3-hour drive by car.
What a day costs
| Dorm bed / budget hotel | ₹300–600 |
| Food (thali / street food) | ₹150–350 |
| Local transport (auto) | ₹100–300 |
| Monument entry fees | ₹50–500 |
When to go
October to March is the best time — the weather is cool and clear, perfect for walking around the monuments. November to February can be foggy in the early morning, which can obscure the Taj sunrise view — check the forecast before booking a sunrise visit. March to June is hot, with temperatures crossing 40°C in April-May. The Taj looks stunning in summer light but walking around mid-afternoon is uncomfortable. July to September is monsoon — the gardens are green and the air is clear after rain, but humidity is high. The full-moon night visits to the Taj require advance booking months ahead.
Suggested itinerary
Day 1: Taj Mahal at Sunrise and Agra Fort
Arrive from Delhi by the early morning Shatabdi or Gatimaan Express. Go straight to the Taj Mahal for sunrise — the eastern gate opens 30 minutes before sunrise and is the least crowded. Spend 2 hours at the Taj. Walk to Agra Fort (2 km, ₹150 auto) and explore for 1.5-2 hours. Visit Mehtab Bagh across the river in the late afternoon for the sunset view of the Taj from the back.
Day 2: Baby Taj and Fatehpur Sikri
Visit Itmad-ud-Daulah (Baby Taj) in the morning — it is smaller but intricately detailed with marble inlay work. Then take a shared taxi or bus to Fatehpur Sikri (40 km, ₹200-300 per person, 1 hour). Explore the Mughal ghost city — the Buland Darwaza, Panch Mahal and the tomb of Salim Chishti. Return to Agra by evening. Catch a train back to Delhi.
