Getting there
Amarnath is a Hindu shrine in a cave at 3,888 m in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, 141 km from Srinagar. The cave contains an ice stalagmite that grows and shrinks with the phases of the moon and is worshipped as a natural Shiva lingam. The Amarnath Yatra takes place annually in July-August and attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims. The main routes are from Pahalgam (a 46 km trek, 3-5 days) and from Baltal (a 14 km trek, 1-2 days). The cave is at the end of a steep valley surrounded by snow-covered peaks. The yatra is one of the most challenging pilgrimages in India due to the altitude and the rugged terrain. It is a great destination for student backpackers looking for an affordable trip. The area is well-connected to major Indian cities by road, rail and air.

Why go
The Amarnath cave is the main reason for the yatra. The cave is about 40 m deep and 30 m high, and the ice lingam inside is formed naturally from dripping water that freezes over the winter. The lingam is worshipped along with two smaller ice formations representing Parvati and Ganesha. The cave was rediscovered in the 19th century and has been a major pilgrimage site since. The trek route from Pahalgam passes through Panjtarni, the final camp before the cave, and the Sheshnag Lake (a glacial lake at 3,570 m). The yatra has a deeply devotional atmosphere with pilgrims chanting and carrying saffron flags.
The Amarnath Yatra is a high-altitude trek. The Pahalgam route is 46 km with an altitude gain from 2,130 m to 3,888 m. The trail passes through forest, open meadows and rocky scree. Ponies, palanquins and helicopter services (from Baltal or Pahalgam to near the cave) are available. The shorter Baltal route is 14 km but is steeper and more physically demanding. The return journey is downhill and takes 1-2 days. The yatra requires moderate fitness and the ability to walk for 4-6 hours per day.
How to reach
The nearest major city is Srinagar, about 141 km from the cave. The Pahalgam base camp is 96 km from Srinagar. The Baltal base camp is 99 km from Srinagar. Shared taxis from Srinagar to Pahalgam or Baltal take 2-3 hours (₹400-600 per person). The routes are determined by the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board annually and can change based on weather and security conditions — check current timings and fares with the Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board (shriamarnathjishrine.com) before travel. The nearest airport is Srinagar. The nearest railway station is Anantnag (37 km from Pahalgam).

Student hacks
- ▸Register online through the SASB website before the journey — walk-in registration adds time and uncertainty.
- ▸Take the shorter Baltal route if you want a shorter trek — 14 km one way (1-2 days) instead of 46 km (3-5 days).
- ▸Carry dry fruits, energy bars and ORS packets — the food on the trek is basic and overpriced.
- ▸The helicopter service from Baltal costs ₹2,500-5,000 one way — book online well in advance as slots fill up fast.
- ▸Physical preparation is essential — 2-3 weeks of cardio and stair climbing before the yatra will make the trek manageable.
Safety & permits
Indian nationals must register for the Amarnath Yatra through the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB). Registration includes a health certificate requiring the pilgrim to declare medical fitness. The yatra involves walking at high altitude (up to 3,888 m) — altitude sickness is a real risk. The Shri Amarnath Shrine Board sets up medical camps along the route. The trail has tea stalls and food stops at regular intervals. The weather can change rapidly — carry warm and waterproof clothing. Adequate physical preparation is essential. ATMs are not available on the trek — carry cash from Srinagar or Jammu.
