Getting there

Anjuna is a village in North Goa famous for the Anjuna Beach and the Wednesday Flea Market. The beach was the centre of the hippie movement in Goa in the 1960s-70s and still has a bohemian vibe. The Anjuna Beach is a rocky beach with clean sand and a distinctive red cliff overlooking the sea. The Wednesday Flea Market is one of the largest markets in Goa with stalls selling clothes, jewellery, handicrafts and food. Anjuna also has the Curlies beach shack (a landmark), the Anjuna cliffs for sunset views, and the Chapora Fort (a 15-minute walk). It is a great destination for student backpackers looking for an affordable trip. The area is well-connected to major Indian cities by road, rail and air.

Why go

Leisure

Anjuna Beach is divided into two parts by a rocky outcrop — the main beach and the quiet stretch near the Anjuna cliffs. The beach has several shacks — Curlies is the most famous, with cushions on the sand and music. The beach is less commercial than Calangute and attracts a more alternative crowd. The sunset from the Anjuna cliffs is spectacular — the red cliffs glow in the evening light. The Anjuna Flea Market (every Wednesday) is the main attraction — 500+ stalls spread over a large area near the beach. The market sells clothes, leather goods, silver jewellery, home decor, musical instruments and spices. The Saturday Night Market at Arpora (2 km) is an evening market with food, music and shopping. The Anjuna village has small boutiques and art galleries.

How to reach

Anjuna is 20 km from Panaji and 10 km from Calangute. Buses from Panaji (₹20-30) and Calangute (₹10-20) connect. Scooter rental (₹300-500 per day) is the best way to get around. The nearest railway station is Madgaon (35 km). The nearest airport is Dabolim (45 km).

Arrive in Anjuna (Wednesday recommended). Visit the flea market in the morning. Afternoon at Anjuna Beach. Sunset at the Anjuna cliffs.

Student hacks

  • The flea market is free to enter — bargaining expected (start at 50% of asking price).
  • Curlies beach shack has minimum order policy (₹200-300) — one drink qualifies for a table on the sand.
  • Scooter rental (₹300-400 per day) is the best way to explore Anjuna and surrounding beaches.
  • Stay in the village area (₹600-800) — quieter than beachfront and cheaper.
  • Visit Chapora Fort at sunset for the best view of the coastline — free entry.
  • The Saturday Night Market at Arpora (₹100 entry) has better food options than Anjuna flea market.

Safety & permits

No permit needed. Anjuna Beach can have strong currents in monsoon. The flea market has pickpocket risk — watch your belongings. Scooter requires a valid driving licence. ATMs in Anjuna are limited — carry cash for the flea market.
