Getting there

Belur is a town in Karnataka, 35 km from Hassan, known for the Chennakeshava Temple — one of the finest examples of Hoysala architecture. The temple was built by King Vishnuvardhana of the Hoysala dynasty in 1117 CE to commemorate his victory over the Cholas. The temple is built on a star-shaped platform with intricate soapstone carvings — the walls are covered in scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Belur was the early capital of the Hoysala dynasty along with nearby Halebidu which was the main capital. Belur is a UNESCO World Heritage tentative site. It is a great destination for student backpackers looking for an affordable trip. The area is well-connected to major Indian cities by road, rail and air.

Why go

Cultural

The Chennakeshava Temple is the main attraction — the star-shaped platform, the 38 ft tall pillars (each carved from a single stone, some producing musical notes), and the bracket figures (Madanikas) are the highlights. The temple has a 13 m tall image of Kesava (Vishnu). The Alamelamma Shrine and the Somanath Temple are within the complex. The temple's lathe-turned pillars are a unique feature of Hoysala architecture.

Cultural

The nearby Halebidu (Hoysaleswara Temple, 15 km) is another Hoysala masterpiece with elaborate wall carvings. The BASAR Hall (Belur Archaeological Site) has a small museum. The Yagachi Dam and the Gorur Dam are nearby. The Sakleshpur (40 km) has coffee plantations and trekking trails in the Western Ghats.
