Getting there

Bhopal is the capital of Madhya Pradesh, known as the City of Lakes for the two artificial lakes (Upper and Lower Lake) created in the 11th century. The city has a mix of old Mughal-era architecture (Taj-ul-Masajid, one of Asia's largest mosques) and modern cultural institutions (Bharat Bhavan). Bhopal is the base for two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Sanchi Stupa (46 km) and the Bhimbetka Rock Shelters (45 km). The city is quieter than Delhi and has a distinct Old City (Muslim-influenced) and New City (modern). It is a great destination for student backpackers looking for an affordable trip. The area is well-connected to major Indian cities by road, rail and air. The destination offers a mix of experiences that cater to all kinds of travellers, from solo backpackers to small groups.

Why go

Cultural

Taj-ul-Masajid in the old city is one of the largest mosques in Asia, completed in 1985 with pink facades and two 18-storey minarets. The Bharat Bhavan cultural centre has an art gallery, a museum of tribal art, and an open-air theatre. The Gohar Mahal on the Upper Lake bank is a 19th-century palace. The Birla Museum has a collection of sculptures.

Spiritual

Sanchi Stupa (46 km) is a UNESCO site with the Great Stupa built by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE — one of the oldest stone structures in India. The Bhimbetka Rock Shelters (45 km) have prehistoric cave paintings dating back 30,000 years, discovered in 1957.

How to reach

Bhopal has its own railway station with direct trains from Delhi (Shatabdi, 7-8 hours; sleeper class ₹400-600). The airport has flights from Delhi and Mumbai. Buses from Delhi to Bhopal take 13-14 hours.

  • Bhimbetka entry is ₹25 — the 30,000-year-old cave paintings are a bargain at this price.
  • Take city buses to Sanchi (₹50-100) and Bhimbetka (₹100-150) rather than taxis.
  • Stay in the new city area near the railway station for budget hotels.
