Getting there

Chail is a small hill station in the Solan district of Himachal Pradesh, set at 2,250 m in the lower Himalayas. It was the summer capital of the Patiala royal family and was built around a palace that was once the residence of the Maharaja of Patiala. Chail is best known for having the highest cricket ground in the world at 2,444 m. The town is quieter than Shimla and less visited, with forested hills and walking trails. The main attractions are the Chail Palace (now a heritage hotel), the cricket ground, the Kali Ka Tibba temple with panoramic views, and the Chail Wildlife Sanctuary. It is a great destination for student backpackers looking for an affordable trip. The destination offers a mix of experiences that cater to all kinds of travellers, from solo backpackers to small groups.

Why go

Cultural

Chail Palace is a mock-Tudor building set in 80 acres of gardens. It was built in 1891 by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala. The palace is now a heritage hotel but the grounds and gardens are open to non-guests for a small fee. The cricket ground was built in 1893 by levelling a hilltop — it stands at 2,444 m and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. The ground was built for the Maharaja's British guests. The Kali Ka Tibba temple at 2,700 m is dedicated to Goddess Kali and offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding valleys.

Leisure

Chail Wildlife Sanctuary covers 110 sq km of oak and deodar forest with walking trails and a small population of pheasants, monkeys and deer. The sanctuary is not heavily visited and the trails are quiet. The walk from Chail Palace to Kali Ka Tibba is a 3 km uphill path through the forest. The Sadhupul Lake, 15 km from Chail, is a small reservoir with a picnic area. The views from the cricket ground are of the surrounding hills and, on clear days, the Himalayan peaks.

How to reach

The nearest railway station is Kalka, about 45 km from Chail. Trains from Delhi to Kalka take 5-6 hours (sleeper class ₹300-500). From Kalka, buses to Chail take about 1.5-2 hours (₹150-250). Direct buses are limited and most travellers take a bus to Solan or Kasauli and then a local connection — check current timings and fares with HRTC (hrtchp.com) before travel. The nearest airport is Chandigarh, about 80 km away. Chail is 45 km from Shimla — shared taxis are available. The town is walkable — the palace, cricket ground and main market are within 2 km.

When to go

March to June is the summer season — pleasant weather and clear views. October to November offers excellent visibility of the Himalayan range from Kali Ka Tibba. December to February is cold with occasional snowfall. July to September is monsoon — the forest is lush, rain is frequent. For the best views and walking conditions, April-June and October-November are ideal. The cricket ground is open year-round and is worth visiting even in the off-season.

Suggested itinerary

  1. Day 1: Arrive and Palace Grounds

Arrive in Chail from Kalka or Chandigarh by afternoon. Check into a hotel near the market. Visit the Chail Palace grounds — walk the gardens and see the facade. Walk to the cricket ground for sunset. Dinner at a local restaurant.

  2. Day 2: Kali Ka Tibba and Sanctuary

Trek to Kali Ka Tibba in the early morning (3 km uphill, 1-1.5 hours). The view from the top is the best in Chail. Return for breakfast. Walk the wildlife sanctuary trails in the late morning. Visit the cricket ground again if you want to walk on the pitch. Evening free for the market.

  3. Day 3: Depart

Visit the Sadhupul Lake on the way out if you have time. Catch a bus to Shimla or Kalka.

Student hacks

  • Chail Palace grounds have an entry fee of ₹100-200 for non-guests — worth it for the gardens alone.
  • The walk to Kali Ka Tibba is free — the best thing to do in Chail and costs nothing.
  • Stay in a homestay in the lower market area — cheaper than the hotels near the palace.
  • Combine Chail with Kasauli and Shimla — all three are within 30-50 km of each other.
  • Carry cash — Chail has very few ATMs and UPI is not reliable.

Safety & permits

Indian nationals do not need any permit for Chail. The town is safe. The wildlife sanctuary trails are safe during daylight. The walk to Kali Ka Tibba is uphill and can take 1-1.5 hours — carry water. ATMs are limited in Chail — carry cash from Kalka, Chandigarh or Shimla. Mobile coverage from BSNL and Jio is available on the ridge. The town is safe for solo travellers. Chail has a small police station and basic medical facilities.
