Getting there
Chakrata is a remote hill station in the Dehradun district of Uttarakhand, set at 2,100 m in the Garhwal region. It is a quiet cantonment town of the Indian Army and is significantly less visited than Mussoorie or Dehradun. The main attractions are the Tiger Falls (one of the highest direct waterfalls in India at 50 m), the Deoban (Sacred Forest) walking trails, and the views from the town's various viewpoints onto the Tons River valley and the Yamuna valley beyond. Chakrata is not a commercial tourist town — there are no malls, no nightlife and very few restaurants. The appeal is in walking through pine and deodar forest, seeing the falls in full flow, and spending days without any city noise.

Why go
Chakrata is a base for treks in the Tons Valley region. The trek to Tiger Falls is a 4 km downhill walk through forest from the main town — the waterfall is 50 m high and falls into a pool that is swimmable in summer. The Deoban trek is a forest walk through a protected sacred grove at 2,700 m with panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks. The Chhimli viewpoint is a 2-hour walk from the town centre. Paragliding is offered from a launch point near the town during the summer months. The Kanasar forest area, 20 km from Chakrata, has heritage deodar trees that are over 400 years old.
Chakrata is for travellers who want isolation. There are no main attractions to tick off — the experience is walking through forest, sitting at viewpoints, and watching the light change over the valleys. The Tons River valley, visible from the town's ridge, is one of the deeper river valleys in Uttarakhand. The Mundali viewpoint near the army area has a wide view of the Yamuna and Tons valleys meeting. The small local market has basic shops and a few restaurants serving Garhwali food. The nearby village of Haripur has a small waterfall and a temple.
How to reach
The nearest railway station is Dehradun, about 90 km from Chakrata. Trains from Delhi to Dehradun take 5-6 hours (sleeper class ₹250-400). From Dehradun, buses and shared taxis to Chakrata take about 3 hours (₹200-400 per person). Services are limited and may operate only a few times daily — check current timings and fares with UTC (utc.uk.gov.in) before travel. The nearest airport is Dehradun's Jolly Grant airport, about 100 km away. Chakrata is small and walkable — the town centre, the market and most viewpoints are within walking distance.

When to go
March to June is the best season for clear weather, waterfall swimming and paragliding. October to November offers clear skies and comfortable temperatures with fewer visitors. December to February is very cold — temperatures drop well below freezing and the area can receive moderate snowfall. July to September is monsoon — the forest is lush and the waterfalls are at their fullest, but landslides are common and road access can be disrupted. The ideal time for Tiger Falls in full flow is just after the monsoon, in September-October.

Student hacks
- ▸Chakrata is one of the cheapest Uttarakhand hill stations — homestays from ₹400 and food under ₹200 per meal.
- ▸The Tiger Falls trail is free — no entry fee compared to commercialised waterfalls in other hill stations.
- ▸Walk everywhere — Chakrata's main attractions are all within walking distance and there is no auto culture.
- ▸Carry cash from Dehradun — there is no reliable ATM in Chakrata.
- ▸Combine with Dehradun and Mussoorie for a longer Garhwal trip — Chakrata is 3 hours from Dehradun.
Safety & permits
Indian nationals do not need any permit for Chakrata. The cantonment area has a military presence and is very safe. The Tiger Falls trail can be slippery — wear proper walking shoes. The waterfall pool has strong currents after rain — do not swim during or immediately after monsoon. ATMs are limited — carry sufficient cash from Dehradun. Mobile coverage from BSNL is available on the ridge but Jio and Airtel may be patchy. The area is safe for solo travellers but the town is very quiet with minimal night activity. Check road conditions before travelling in the monsoon.
