Getting there

Chamba is a historic town in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, set at 996 m on the banks of the Ravi River. It is one of the oldest princely states in Himachal, founded in the 6th century by Raja Maru. The old town has a distinct character — narrow lanes, carved wooden balconies, and a cluster of stone temples dating from the 7th to 11th centuries. Chamba is less visited than Dalhousie or Khajjiar, which are in the same district. The main attractions are the Lakshmi Narayan temple complex, the Bhuri Singh Museum with Pahari miniature paintings, and the Chamera Lake created by the dam on the Ravi River. Chamba is warmer than most Himachal hill stations due to its lower elevation.

Why go

Cultural

The Lakshmi Narayan temple complex is the main cultural draw — six stone temples built between the 7th and 11th centuries in the Nagara style, dedicated to Vishnu, Shiva and Shakti. The temples have pyramidal spires and are made of local grey stone with intricate carvings. The Bhuri Singh Museum, built in 1908, has a collection of Pahari miniature paintings from the Chamba and Kangra schools, along with stone sculptures and a coin collection. The Champavati Temple, dedicated to a 7th-century princess, has a carved wooden ceiling. The Chamba minjar (silk tassel) is a traditional craft unique to the town.

Leisure

The Chamba Palace (Rang Mahal) is a 19th-century palace with Mughal-influenced architecture, though it is not fully open to the public. The Chamera Lake, 20 km from Chamba, is a reservoir on the Ravi River with boating and lakeside walks. The Sahu Valley and the Khajjiar meadow are within 30 km. The town's riverside area has walking paths along the Ravi. The Chamba market sells local textiles, silver jewellery and the traditional Chamba chappal (slippers).

How to reach

The nearest railway station is Pathankot, about 110 km from Chamba. Trains from Delhi to Pathankot take 6-7 hours (sleeper class ₹300-500). From Pathankot, buses to Chamba take about 3-4 hours (₹250-400). Buses are regular as Chamba is a district headquarters — check current timings and fares with HRTC (hrtchp.com) before travel. The nearest airport is Gaggal (Kangra), about 140 km away. Chamba town is walkable in the old area — the main market, temples and museum are within 1-2 km. Local autos connect the bus stand to the upper parts of the town.

When to go

March to June is the best season — comfortable temperatures and clear weather. October to November offers clear skies and pleasant conditions. December to February is cold but not extreme — Chamba is at a lower elevation than Dalhousie so temperatures are milder. July to September is monsoon — the Ravi River swells and the landscape is green, but outdoor activities are limited. For temple visits and cultural tourism, October-March is ideal.

Student hacks

  • The Lakshmi Narayan temple complex has no entry fee — you can spend hours among the stone temples and carvings for free.
