Getting there
Chittorgarh is a city in southern Rajasthan, best known for the Chittorgarh Fort — the largest fort in India, spread over 700 acres on a 180 m high hill. The fort was the capital of the Sisodia Rajputs and was sacked three times (1303, 1535, 1567), each time by a larger Muslim army, with the Rajput women performing jauhar (self-immolation). The fort has gates, palaces, temples and memorial towers. The main structures inside are the Vijay Stambh (Victory Tower, 37 m), the Kirti Stambh (Tower of Fame), the Rani Padmini Palace, and the Meera Temple. Chittorgarh is a symbol of Rajput pride and sacrifice. It is a great destination for student backpackers looking for an affordable trip. The area is well-connected to major Indian cities by road, rail and air.

Why go
The Chittorgarh Fort complex covers 700 acres with 65+ structures. The Vijay Stambh is a 9-storey tower built by Rana Kumbha to celebrate a victory over Mahmud Khilji — climb the 157 steps for a view of the entire fort. The Kirti Stambh is a Jain tower with carvings of Jain Tirthankaras. Rani Padmini Palace, where Rani Padmini performed jauhar, overlooks a lotus pool. The Meera Temple is a 15th-century temple dedicated to Krishna, associated with the poet-saint Meera Bai. The Fateh Prakash Palace has a museum with Rajput artifacts.
The best way to see the fort is by walking or cycling — the 700-acre area is large enough for a half-day of walking. Cycling on the fort roads is a good option (bicycles available near the fort entrance). The Gaumukh reservoir (Cow's Mouth) inside the fort is a natural spring. The Panna Meena Ka Kund is a stepwell near the palace. The Chittorgarh town below has a market and the Kalika Mata temple.
