Getting there
Dalhousie is a hill station in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, set at 1,970 m on a ridge with views of the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges. It was established in 1854 by the British as a summer retreat and named after the Governor-General Lord Dalhousie. The town is spread across five hills — Kathlog, Potreyn, Terah, Bakrota and Bhangora — connected by walking paths through pine and deodar forest. Dalhousie is quieter and less commercial than Shimla or Manali. The architecture includes colonial-era bungalows, St. John's Church (1863) and the old post office. The town is the gateway to Khajjiar (the mini Switzerland of India), 22 km away. It is a great destination for student backpackers looking for an affordable trip.

Why go
Dalhousie is a walking town. The main attractions are within walking distance of each other. Panchpula is a picnic spot where five streams converge, with a small waterfall and a Samadhi of the poet Sardar Ajit Singh. Subhash Baoli is a spring with a viewpoint at the edge of the ridge. Dainkund Peak is the highest point in Dalhousie (2,755 m) with a 360-degree view of the surrounding valleys and the Pir Panjal range — a 3 km walk uphill from Gandhi Chowk. The 19th-century churches — St. John's, St. Francis and St. Andrew's — are set in gardens with mountain views.
The trek from Dalhousie to Khajjiar through the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary is a 6 km forest walk that takes about 3 hours. The Kalatop Sanctuary has oak and deodar forest with a small population of pheasants, deer and bears. The Satdhara Falls near Panchpula is a 15 m waterfall with seven mineral springs said to have therapeutic properties. The Ganji Pahari (Bald Hill) trek is a 2-hour walk from Bakrota Hill to a barren patch of land with good valley views. Cycling from Dalhousie to Khajjiar is a popular downhill ride.
