Getting there
Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand and the main transport gateway for the Garhwal Himalaya and the Char Dham Yatra. The city sits in the Doon Valley between the Shivalik hills and the Mussoorie ridge at 450 m elevation. It has a relaxed, small-city atmosphere compared to the hill stations it serves. The Forest Research Institute is the most photogenic building in the city — a sprawling colonial structure set in manicured grounds. The Mindrolling Monastery and the Tibetan Buddhist temple complex in Clement Town reflect the city's large Tibetan exile community. Dehradun's own attractions — Robber's Cave, Lacchiwala and the local markets — are enough for a day or two, but most travellers use it as a base for Mussoorie, Rishikesh and beyond.

Why go
Dehradun's main attraction is the Forest Research Institute (FRI), a colonial-era building with Greco-Roman architecture set in 450 hectares of botanical gardens. The campus is open to visitors and worth a half-day walk. Robber's Cave (Gucchu Pani) is a 3 km-long stream cave where water disappears underground and reappears further down — a popular picnic spot, especially in summer. The Mindrolling Monastery near Clement Town has one of the largest stupas in Asia at 60 metres, with a museum and gardens. The Tibetan market in the city centre sells handicrafts and local produce.
Dehradun has a large concentration of boarding schools — the Doon School, Welham Girls and other institutions make Dehradun an education hub. The Wildlife Institute of India and the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing are research centres based here. The Tibetan community adds a cultural study dimension — the Tibetan Children's Village and the schools around Clement Town offer short volunteering and teaching opportunities. The city has a growing student population from the nearby universities and the Uttarakhand Technical University.
How to reach
Dehradun is well connected to Delhi by train. The Shatabdi Express takes 4.5 hours (₹700-900 chair car), while overnight trains take 6-7 hours (sleeper class ₹250-400). The departure time may have been revised — check current timings and fares with UTC (utc.uk.gov.in) before travel. The nearest airport is Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport, 25 km from the city, with flights from Delhi under ₹4,000. Buses from Delhi ISBT to Dehradun cost ₹300-500 and take 6-7 hours. Once in Dehradun, the city bus network and auto-rickshaws cover all main areas. The railway station is in the city centre.

When to go
October to March is the best period. The weather is pleasant with daytime temperatures between 15°C and 25°C. March to June is warm but comfortable in the mornings and evenings. July to September is monsoon — the city receives heavy rain, and Robber's Cave has more water flow but the trails can be slippery. December and January can be cold (5°C-10°C at night). The Lacchiwala picnic spot near the river is best visited in summer (April-June) when the water is high enough for wading.

Safety & permits
Indian nationals do not need any permit for Dehradun. The city is safe and well policed. The FRI campus has guards at the entrance and is safe for solo visitors. Robber's Cave can be slippery — wear shoes with good grip and avoid going deep into the cave during the monsoon when water levels are high. Mindrolling Monastery is a calm, spiritual space — photography rules are posted at the entrance. ATMs and UPI are widely available. The city is safe for solo travellers, including women. Standard city precautions apply for late-night walks in less busy areas.
