Getting there

The Elephanta Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Elephanta Island (Gharapuri), 10 km from Mumbai. The island has 7 rock-cut caves from the 5th-7th centuries CE, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The main cave (Cave 1) has a 20 ft high Trimurti sculpture — a three-headed Shiva depicting the creator (Brahma), preserver (Vishnu) and destroyer (Shiva). The island also has the Elephanta ruins, a small museum and a beach. The ferry from Gateway of India takes 1 hour. It is a great destination for student backpackers looking for an affordable trip. The area is well-connected to major Indian cities by road, rail and air. The destination offers a mix of experiences that cater to all kinds of travellers, from solo backpackers to small groups.

Why go

Cultural

The Trimurti sculpture in the main cave is one of the finest examples of Indian sculpture — a 20 ft high three-headed Shiva carved from basalt rock. The cave has large panels depicting Shiva's legends — the marriage of Shiva and Parvati, Shiva slaying Andhaka, and the descent of the Ganga. The island was originally called Gharapuri and was renamed Elephanta by the Portuguese after a stone elephant they found.

How to reach

From Mumbai's Gateway of India, take a ferry (₹200-400 return per person, 1 hour). Ferries run 9 AM-2 PM. The island has walkways, a toy train (₹40-50) and steps (600 steps from the jetty to the caves).
