Getting there

Fatehpur Sikri is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Uttar Pradesh, 40 km from Agra. It was the capital of the Mughal Empire under Emperor Akbar from 1571 to 1585, built to honour the Sufi saint Salim Chishti who predicted the birth of Akbar's son Jahangir. The city was abandoned after 15 years due to water scarcity. The red sandstone complex includes the Buland Darwaza (the world's highest gateway at 54 m), the Panch Mahal (a 5-storey palace), and the tomb of Salim Chishti (a white marble shrine). Fatehpur Sikri is one of the best-preserved Mughal cities in India. It is a great destination for student backpackers looking for an affordable trip. The area is well-connected to major Indian cities by road, rail and air.

Why go

Cultural

The Buland Darwaza (54 m high) is the main entrance to the complex — built by Akbar to commemorate his victory in Gujarat. The Panch Mahal is a five-storey palace with 176 columns. The Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of Public Audience) and Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience) have separate architectural styles. The Salim Chishti's Tomb is a white marble shrine with intricate carvings. The Jodha Bai's Palace is the residence of Akbar's wife.

Cultural

The complex is built entirely of red sandstone with Indo-Islamic architectural elements. The Anup Talao is a ornamental pool. The Ibadat Khana (House of Worship) was where Akbar held religious debates. The Birbal's House has carved pillars. The Hawa Mahal and the Treasury building complete the complex. The city was abandoned in 1585, but is remarkably well-preserved.
