Getting there
Halebidu (Halebid) is a town in Karnataka, 15 km from Belur and 30 km from Hassan. It was the capital of the Hoysala dynasty in the 12th-13th centuries. The Hoysaleswara Temple is the main attraction — a twin temple dedicated to Shiva with the most elaborate carvings in the Hoysala style. The temple was built in 1121 CE but was never completed. The walls are covered with 200+ panels of carvings showing animals, gods, scenes from the epics, and daily life. The Kedareshwara Temple (a smaller temple) is nearby. Halebidu was sacked by the Delhi Sultanate in the 14th century. It is a great destination for student backpackers looking for an affordable trip. The area is well-connected to major Indian cities by road, rail and air.

Why go
The Hoysaleswara Temple is arguably the most detailed Hoysala temple — the soapstone walls are carved with elephants, gods, dancers, musicians and scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The temple has two sanctums (one for Hoysaleswara, one for Shantaleswara). The temple stands on a star-shaped platform. The Nandi pavilion has a massive Nandi bull. The Archaeological Museum (within the complex) has sculpture fragments.
The Kedareshwara Temple (1 km from the main temple) is a smaller but well-preserved Hoysala temple. The Jain basadis (temples) from the same period are in the town. The Hoysala art style reached its peak at Halebidu before the dynasty declined after the invasions. The temple is also part of the UNESCO tentative list.
