Getting there

Rail: Jaisalmer · Air: Jaisalmer (seasonal); Jodhpur

Jaisalmer rises out of the Thar Desert in western Rajasthan like a sandcastle — the entire fort, built from golden-yellow sandstone, looks like part of the landscape. The fort is still a living settlement with shops, homes and temples inside its walls. Outside, the city is a relaxed grid of bazaars, havelis and guesthouses. Jaisalmer is the most relaxed of Rajasthan's big four cities and the easiest place in India to arrange a desert experience — overnight camel safaris into the dunes around Sam and Khuri are the main activity. The winter months bring pleasant weather, music festivals and a steady flow of travellers. The city is accessible by direct train from Delhi and Jaipur and works well for a 3-4 day trip.

Why go

Cultural

Jaisalmer Fort was built in 1156 and is one of the very few living forts in the world — about 4,000 people still reside within its walls. Walking through its narrow lanes is like exploring a small medieval town, with Jain temples, the Raj Mahal palace and havelis all within the fort. Patwon ki Haveli, Nathmal ki Haveli and Salim Singh ki Haveli are the three most ornate merchant houses in the city, covered in intricate yellow-sandstone carvings. The Gadisar Lake, originally the city's water reservoir, has small temples and ghats around it and is a good spot for a quiet walk.

Adventure

The desert experience is the main reason most travellers come to Jaisalmer. The Sam Sand Dunes, about 45 km from the city, offer camel rides and overnight camps in the desert. Khuri, a smaller village 50 km away, has quieter dunes and fewer commercial camps. A standard overnight camel safari includes a few hours of riding, a sunset over the dunes, dinner around a fire, and sleeping under the stars. For a shorter experience, a sunset camel ride without the overnight stay is also possible. The desert is not a wilderness — you will see other camps — but the scale of the dunes makes it feel remote enough.

How to reach

Jaisalmer railway station is connected to Delhi by direct overnight trains. The most popular is the Delhi Sarai Rohilla-Jaisalmer Superfast Express, which takes about 11 hours (sleeper class ₹400-600). Check live timings on IRCTC or a train app before booking. Direct overnight buses from Delhi to Jaisalmer are also available but the train is more comfortable for this distance. From Jaipur, the train takes about 7 hours. The nearest airport is Jodhpur, 290 km away, for flights from Delhi. Jaisalmer also has a seasonal airport with limited flights from Delhi and Jaipur during peak tourist season. From the railway station, the fort area is ₹100-150 by auto.

When to go

October to February is the best time. Daytime temperatures are pleasant (20°C to 28°C) and the desert nights can be cold — carry a warm layer. November to January is peak season with many festivals. March to April is warm but still doable. May to September is extremely hot — daytime temperatures exceed 45°C and the desert is uncomfortable. Monsoon (July-August) brings little rain to Jaisalmer but high humidity. The Jaisalmer Desert Festival, held in February, features folk music, camel races and cultural performances. If visiting in summer, plan early morning and late evening activities only.

Suggested itinerary

  1. Day 1: Arrive and Explore the Fort

Arrive in Jaisalmer by morning train. Check into a guesthouse inside or near the fort. Spend the morning walking through the fort lanes — visit the Jain temples and the Raj Mahal palace. In the afternoon, explore Patwon ki Haveli and the other merchant houses. Watch the sunset from the fort ramparts overlooking the city.

  2. Day 2: Desert Safari and Overnight Camp

Spend the morning at Gadisar Lake and the bazaar. At around 2 PM, leave for your camel safari — most operators pick you up from your hotel and drive you to the dunes. Ride a camel to the sunset point, watch the sun go down over the desert, and return to the camp for dinner and an overnight stay. Sleep under the stars or in a basic tent.

  3. Day 3: Return from Desert and Depart

Wake up early in the desert for a sunrise tea and a short morning camel ride. Drive back to Jaisalmer by mid-morning. Take a final walk through the fort and the bazaars for souvenirs. Catch an evening train back to Delhi or onward to Jodhpur.

Student hacks

  • Stay inside the fort for the best experience — guesthouses within the walls cost ₹300-600 and give you the old-city atmosphere.
  • Overnight camel safari prices range from ₹800 to ₹1,500 — ask what is included (transport, meals, camping gear) and compare before booking.
  • Khuri dunes are quieter and cheaper than Sam Dunes but have fewer facilities — choose based on your preference.
  • The desert is cold at night even in winter — carry a hoodie or light jacket even if you are from Delhi.
  • Bargain hard in the bazaar — the initial price for souvenirs is usually 3-4 times the actual value.

Safety & permits

Indian nationals do not need any permits for Jaisalmer or the desert camps. The overnight camel safaris are well organised but quality varies. When booking, ask what is included — transport, dinner, sleeping bag, mattress, and morning tea should all be part of the quoted price. The Sam Dunes are more commercial and have better facilities; Khuri is quieter but more basic. Carry water and sunscreen even on the safari — the desert sun is intense even in winter. ATMs are available in the main city. The fort area is safe for solo travellers, including women, though the lanes inside the fort are unlit after dark — carry a torch or phone light.
