Getting there
Jodhpur is the second-largest city in Rajasthan, known as the Blue City for the blue-painted houses in the old Brahmin quarter around the Mehrangarh Fort. The fort, one of India's largest and most impressive, sits on a 125 m high hill overlooking the city. Jodhpur was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, a Rathore Rajput ruler. The city has a walled old city with narrow lanes, the clock tower (Ghanta Ghar) and the Sardar Market. Jodhpur is a major tourist destination and a good base for exploring the Thar Desert region, including the Bishnoi villages and the desert safari to Osian. It is a great destination for student backpackers looking for an affordable trip. The area is well-connected to major Indian cities by road, rail and air.

Why go
Mehrangarh Fort is the main attraction — one of India's best-preserved forts with a museum, courtyards and panoramic views of the city. The blue houses of the Brahmin quarter are visible from the fort ramparts. Jaswant Thada is a 19th-century marble cenotaph with intricate carvings. The Umaid Bhawan Palace, built in the 1930s, is partly a luxury hotel and partly a museum. The Toorji Ka Jhalra stepwell in the old city is a 1740s stepwell restored in 2016. The Sardar Market and the clock tower area are the heart of the old city. Jodhpur is a food destination in Rajasthan. The Makhaniya Lassi at the Mishrilal Hotel is a Jodhpur institution — thick sweet lassi served in steel glasses. The Mirchi Bada (chilli fritters) at the Shahi Samosa shop is a local breakfast staple. Dal baati churma (the Rajasthani staple) is served at restaurants like Janta Bhojnalaya. The Pyaaz Kachori at Rawat Mishthan Bhandar is a Jodhpur specialty. The old city food walk in the evening covers the famous street food stalls.
