Getting there
Kanchipuram (Kanchi) is a historic temple city in Tamil Nadu, 75 km from Chennai. It was the capital of the Pallava kingdom and is known as the City of a Thousand Temples. Kanchipuram has temples from the Pallava (7th century) to the Vijayanagara (16th century) periods. The main temples are the Ekambareswarar Temple (dedicated to Shiva, with a 56 m tower), the Varadharaja Perumal Temple (Vishnu, with a 100-pillar hall), and the Kailasanathar Temple (the oldest, built in 685 CE). Kanchipuram is also famous for Kanchipuram silk sarees — handwoven with gold zari. It is a great destination for student backpackers looking for an affordable trip. The area is well-connected to major Indian cities by road, rail and air. The destination offers a mix of experiences that cater to all kinds of travellers, from solo backpackers to small groups.

Why go
The temples of Kanchipuram are architectural masterpieces of the Dravidian style. The Kailasanathar Temple is the finest example of early Pallava architecture — the walls are covered in carvings of gods, animals and mythical creatures. The Ekambareswarar Temple has a 56 m gopuram and a 3,500-year-old mango tree with four different branches. The Varadharaja Perumal Temple has a 100-pillar hall with intricate carvings. The Kamakshi Amman Temple is dedicated to the goddess Parvati.
Kanchipuram silk sarees are world-famous — handwoven with pure silk and gold zari. The silk weaving centre (near the bus stand) has looms where you can see the weaving process. The sarees cost ₹2,000-50,000+ depending on the quality. The Kanchipuram Silk Saree Cooperative and the local shops on the main road sell genuine Kanchipuram sarees.
