Getting there

Kasauli is a small hill station in the Solan district of Himachal Pradesh, set at 1,900 m on a ridge overlooking the Sutlej River valley. It was established as a British cantonment in 1842 and retains a sleepy, orderly character. Kasauli is smaller and quieter than Shimla or Mussoorie, with a single main road (the Mall) and a few walking trails through pine and oak forest. The town is popular as a weekend getaway from Chandigarh and Delhi. The main attractions are Monkey Point (the highest point with a view of the Sutlej valley), Christ Church (1843), the Gilbert Trail through the forest, and the Kasauli Brewery (one of the oldest in Asia). It is a great destination for student backpackers looking for an affordable trip.

Why go

Leisure

Kasauli is a walking town. The Mall is a 2 km road from the bus stand to the church, lined with colonial bungalows and forest on both sides. Monkey Point is a 2 km uphill walk from the Mall to a viewpoint at 1,950 m where the Sutlej River, the Chandigarh plains and the Shivalik hills are all visible. Christ Church is a stone church with a cemetery containing graves from the 1840s. The Gilbert Trail is a 3 km forest walk that starts near the church and loops through oak and pine forest back to the Mall. The Kasauli Brewery, established in the 1820s, produces malt whisky and rum.

Cultural

Kasauli has a small colonial-era sanatorium and the Central Research Institute, established in 1905, which produces vaccines and sera. The institute is not open to the public but the campus is visible from the Mall. The Kasauli Club is a members-only colonial-era club. The town's military hospital was built in the 1840s. The Gurkha Fort, a small fortification on the ridge, dates from the early 19th century. The town's cemetery has the graves of British soldiers and their families from the 19th century.

How to reach

The nearest railway station is Kalka, about 30 km from Kasauli. Trains from Delhi to Kalka take 5-6 hours (sleeper class ₹300-500). From Kalka, buses to Kasauli take about 1 hour (₹100-150). Student hacks

  • Stay outside the cantonment area in the lower part of the Mall — hotels here are ₹200-300 cheaper than near Christ Church.
  • The Gilbert Trail is a free forest walk and the best thing to do in Kasauli — no entry fee, good bird-watching.
  • Monkey Point entry is ₹20 — skip the ropeway and walk the 1.5 km trail for free.
  • Kasauli is close to Chandigarh — combine with a Chandigarh trip for a weekend getaway.
  • Carry cash — Kasauli has limited ATMs and UPI coverage can be patchy.

Safety & permits

Indian nationals do not need any permit for Kasauli. The town is very safe and well patrolled. The Gilbert Trail is a forest walk — stay on the marked path. Monkeys are present on the Monkey Point trail — do not carry food openly. ATMs are limited — carry cash from Kalka or Chandigarh. Mobile coverage from all major networks is available. Medical facilities include a small hospital and a military hospital. The town is safe for solo travellers including solo women. The Kasauli Brewery has a tasting room open to visitors.
