Getting there

Katra is a town in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, set at 800 m in the foothills of the Trikuta Mountains. It is the base camp for the Vaishno Devi Yatra — one of the most popular pilgrimage treks in India, attracting over 8 million visitors annually. The town is entirely dedicated to the pilgrimage — hotels, restaurants and shops line the main road leading to the trek start point. The Vaishno Devi shrine is a cave temple at 1,560 m, 12 km from Katra, dedicated to Goddess Vaishno Devi. The trek to the cave is paved and takes 4-6 hours. Katra is a transit town — visitors typically stay for a night before and after the trek.

Why go

Spiritual

The Vaishno Devi cave temple is the reason to visit Katra. The cave is about 30 m long and narrow (just wide enough for one person) with three natural rock formations representing the three forms of the goddess — Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati. The Ardh Kuwari cave near the main shrine is a smaller cave on the trek route. The Bhairon Mandir, 1.5 km further uphill from the main cave, is dedicated to Bhairon (a form of Shiva) and is visited after the main darshan. The Banganga temple at the start of the trek in Katra has a spring that is believed to have been created by Arjuna's arrow.

Adventure

The 12 km trek from Katra to Vaishno Devi is well paved and suitable for all fitness levels. Ponies, palanquins and helicopter services (from Katra to Sanjichhat) are available. The trek takes 4-6 hours uphill and 3-4 hours downhill. The route passes through the Banganga temple, the Charan Paduka (a rock with the goddess's footprints) at 1 km, and the Sanjichhat rest point at 8 km. The Sanjichhat helipad is used for helicopter services. The trek is crowded year-round, especially during the peak season (March-June and September-November).

How to reach

Katra has its own railway station — Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) — with direct trains from Delhi (the Vaishno Devi Express takes 9-10 hours, sleeper class ₹400-600). Multiple trains operate daily and the station is well connected — check current timings and fares with IRCTC/NTES (enquiry.indianrail.gov.in) before travel. Jammu is 50 km from Katra — shared taxis from Jammu to Katra cost ₹200-300 per person and take 1.5 hours. The nearest airport is Jammu Airport, 50 km away. Katra town is walkable — the main market, the trek start point and the bus stand are within 1-2 km.

When to go

The Vaishno Devi Yatra is open year-round. March-June and September-November are the peak seasons with the largest crowds and best weather. July-August is monsoon — the trek is wet but doable. December-February is cold (snow possible at the cave, temperatures near freezing) — the trek continues but requires warm clothing. For the best balance of weather and crowd size, visit in September-October or February-March. The cave remains open regardless of weather — the yatra only closes for a few hours during extreme weather events.

Suggested itinerary

  1. Day 1: Arrive in Katra

Arrive in Katra from Delhi by train. Check into a hotel near the main market. Register for the Yatra online or at the counter. Visit the Banganga temple. Buy any supplies needed for the trek. Rest early for the 4 AM start.

  2. Day 2: Vaishno Devi Yatra

Start the trek at 4 AM from the Katra start point. The 12 km trek takes 4-6 hours uphill. Reach the cave by 10-11 AM. Queue for darshan (the wait can be 1-3 hours in peak season). After darshan, visit the Bhairon Mandir (1.5 km further — take the ropeway at ₹150). Return to Katra by the afternoon (downhill takes 3-4 hours). Rest at the hotel.

  3. Day 3: Depart

Rest in the morning if needed. Visit the local market for souvenirs and prasad. Catch a train from Katra to Delhi or a bus to Jammu.

Student hacks

  • The yatra registration is free — register online before arriving to avoid the queue at the counter.
  • Start the trek at 3-4 AM to reach the cave before the midday rush — the queue is shortest before 9 AM.
  • Carry water and snacks from Katra — the shops on the trek charge 2-3x the market rate.
  • The trek is well paved — you do not need trekking shoes. Comfortable walking shoes are sufficient.
  • Stay in the lower part of Katra near the bus stand — ₹100-200 cheaper than the hotels near the trek start point.

Safety & permits

Indian nationals need to register for the Vaishno Devi Yatra. Registration can be done online (through the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board website) or at the Yatra registration counter in Katra. The registration is free. The trek is safe and well maintained with lighting, railings and medical checkpoints at regular intervals. The cave has a narrow passage — large bags are not allowed inside (lockers are available at the cave entrance). ATMs are available in Katra. Mobile coverage is patchy on the upper sections of the trek. The town is dedicated to the yatra and is safe for all visitors.
