Getting there
Khajjiar is a small hill station in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, set at 1,920 m in a wide grassy meadow surrounded by deodar forest. It is often called the Mini Switzerland of India — the meadow is roughly circular, about 1 km across, and has a small lake in the centre. The Khajji Nag temple, dedicated to the serpent god, stands at the edge of the meadow. Khajjiar is smaller and quieter than Dalhousie but has become a popular weekend destination from Punjab. The main activity is walking across the meadow, horse riding around the perimeter, and visiting the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary nearby. The town has a single road with hotels and restaurants. It is a great destination for student backpackers looking for an affordable trip.

Why go
The Khajjiar meadow is the entire attraction — a flat grassy clearing in the middle of the forest, surrounded by deodar trees, with the Dhauladhar range visible on the far side. Walking across the meadow takes 30 minutes. Horse riding around the perimeter is available for ₹200-500 per round. The lake in the centre of the meadow is small and surrounded by reeds — not swimmable but good for photographs. The Khajji Nag temple is a small stone temple with a wooden shikara and a large idol of a serpent. The Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary, 6 km from Khajjiar, has walking trails through deodar and oak forest.
The Kalatop-Khajjiar trek is a 6 km walk through the wildlife sanctuary connecting the two destinations. The trail passes through dense deodar forest with views of the Ravi River valley. The Ganji Pahari trek, 4 km from Khajjiar, is a walk to a bald hilltop with panoramic views. Paragliding is available from the ridge above the meadow on clear days in the summer. Cycling from Khajjiar to Lakkad Mandi is a downhill route through the forest.
How to reach
Khajjiar is 22 km from Dalhousie and 30 km from Chamba. The nearest railway station is Pathankot, about 110 km away. Trains from Delhi to Pathankot take 6-7 hours (sleeper class ₹300-500). From Pathankot, buses to Dalhousie take 2.5-3 hours (₹200-300), then a local bus or taxi to Khajjiar (₹100-200). Local buses connect during the tourist season but frequency may be limited — check current timings and fares with HRTC (hrtchp.com) before travel. Khajjiar is small and walkable — the meadow is a 5-minute walk from the bus stop.

When to go
March to June is the summer season — the meadow is green and the weather is pleasant. October to November offers clear skies and fewer crowds. December to February is cold — the meadow can be covered in snow, which is beautiful but cold. July to September is monsoon — the meadow is lush green but frequent rain limits outdoor activity. For the iconic green meadow photos, visit in April-June or September-October. For snow on the meadow, visit in January.

Student hacks
- ▸Khajjiar is expensive compared to Dalhousie — stay in Dalhousie and visit Khajjiar as a day trip to save on accommodation.
- ▸Carry a picnic lunch — the meadow is a perfect spot and hotel food in Khajjiar is overpriced.
- ▸Horse riding rates are negotiable — a ₹500 ride can be haggled down to ₹300 in the off-season.
- ▸The Kalatop trek is free if you walk from Khajjiar — only the sanctuary entry (₹50) is charged if you enter through the gate.
- ▸Visit on a weekday — weekends bring large crowds from Punjab and the meadow gets crowded.
Safety & permits
Indian nationals do not need any permit for Khajjiar. The meadow is safe and well visited. The Kalatop sanctuary has walking trails that are safe during daylight. Horse riding is available from local operators — negotiate the rate before riding. ATMs are not available in Khajjiar — carry cash from Dalhousie or Pathankot. Mobile coverage from BSNL is available on the meadow — other networks may be patchy. The town is safe for solo travellers. Carry warm clothing — the meadow can be windy even on sunny days.
