Getting there

Palampur is a town in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, set at 1,472 m in the Kangra Valley with the Dhauladhar range rising directly behind it. The town is known for its tea gardens — the Palampur tea is a distinct variety grown in the region since the 19th century. Palampur is quieter and less commercial than Dharamshala or Manali. The main attractions are the tea gardens that cover the slopes north of the town, the Neugal Khad walking trail along the stream, the Saurabh Van Vihar forest park, and the Tibetan Buddhist monastery at Tashi Jong. The Palampur area is also a centre for the Nath tradition of yoga, with several ashrams and meditation centres. It is a great destination for student backpackers looking for an affordable trip.

Why go

Leisure

The Palampur tea gardens are the main attraction — rows of tea bushes on the slopes of the Dhauladhar range, with the snow-covered peaks directly above. The Palampur Cooperative Tea Factory offers guided tours and tea tasting. The Neugal Khad is a stream that flows through the town with a walking path along its bank. The Saurabh Van Vihar is a 30-acre forest park with walking trails and a children's play area. The town's Mall Road is a short walk lined with shops and cafes.

Spiritual

The Tashi Jong monastery, 15 km from Palampur, is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery of the Karma Kagyu school, set in a forested area with a large prayer hall and a meditation centre. The Baijnath temple, 15 km south of Palampur, is a 13th-century stone temple dedicated to Shiva as Vaidyanath (the Lord of Physicians). The temple is still in active worship and the lingam inside is covered with silver leaves. The area has several meditation centres and yoga ashrams operated by the Nath tradition.

When to go

March to June is the summer season — the tea gardens are green and the Dhauladhar views are clear. October to November offers crisp air and excellent mountain visibility. December to February is cold — the tea gardens are dormant, but the Dhauladhar snow views are spectacular. July to September is monsoon — heavy rain but the tea garden landscape is at its greenest. For the best tea garden views, visit in April-May when the tea-picking season is active. For clear Dhauladhar views, October-November is ideal.
