Why go
The Great Stupa is 36 m in diameter and 16 m high — a hemispherical dome symbolising the universe. The four toranas (gateways) with carvings of elephants, lions, flowers and scenes from Buddha's life. The Ashoka Pillar (not the original, a replica stands) has the lion capital. The site also has the remains of Buddhist monasteries and temples from the 3rd century BCE to the 12th century CE. Sanchi was a major Buddhist centre from the Mauryan period to the 12th century. The site was abandoned and rediscovered in 1818 by a British officer. The Sanchi Museum has artifacts including the original lion capital. The nearby Chetriya Vihara has a meditation centre.
