Getting there
Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh and the most famous hill station in India, set at 2,200 m in the Lower Himalayas. It served as the summer capital of British India and retains extensive colonial architecture — the Gothic-style Christ Church, the neo-Tudor Viceregal Lodge (now the Indian Institute of Advanced Study), and the gabled wooden houses of the old town. Shimla is built along a 2 km ridge, with the Mall Road running along the spine. The town is connected to Kalka by the UNESCO-listed Kalka-Shimla Toy Train. Shimla is busy, commercial and crowded, especially in summer, but its architecture, views and forest walks make it a worthwhile destination for first-time visitors to Himachal. It is a great destination for student backpackers looking for an affordable trip.

Why go
Shimla's colonial architecture is its main cultural draw. The Viceregal Lodge on Observatory Hill is a Scottish baronial building set in gardens, with guided tours of the interior. Christ Church on the Ridge, built in 1857, has stained glass windows and a functioning congregation. The Gaiety Theatre on Mall Road, built in 1887, still hosts performances. The Jakhoo Temple at the highest point of the ridge is dedicated to Hanuman and has a 33 m statue visible from the town below. The Shimla State Museum has exhibits on Himachal history and Pahari miniature paintings.
The Mall Road is Shimla's social spine — a pedestrian-only walkway lined with cafes, ice cream stalls, bookshops and souvenir stores. The Ridge is an open space adjacent to the Mall Road with views of the snow-covered peaks on clear days. The Annandale ground is a 2 km walk from the Ridge. The Kufri-Chail-Mashobra loop outside Shimla offers forest walks, horse riding and quieter views. The Summer Hill and Chadwick Falls area, 3 km from the Ridge, offers a quieter walk through pine forest.
How to reach
The nearest railway station is Shimla itself — the Kalka-Shimla Toy Train connects to Kalka (5-6 hours, scenic but slow). From Delhi, take the train to Kalka (sleeper class ₹300-500, 5-6 hours), then the toy train to Shimla (₹400-1,000 depending on class, 5-6 hours). Services have been disrupted by landslides but are now operational — check current timings and fares with IRCTC/NTES (enquiry.indianrail.gov.in) before travel. Direct buses from Delhi ISBT Kashmere Gate to Shimla take 9-10 hours (₹400-700). The nearest airport is Chandigarh, about 115 km away. Shimla has local buses and taxis — the main areas are walkable but autos are available.

When to go
March to June is the peak season — the weather is pleasant but the town is very crowded and prices are high. October to February is the off-season — the town is quieter, hotels are cheaper and the snow season (December-January) attracts winter visitors. July to September is monsoon — heavy rain, landslides possible, but the forest is green and the crowds are thinner. For budget travellers, the best time is September-October or February-March when the weather is reasonable and prices are lowest.

Student hacks
- ▸Stay in the Lakkar Bazaar area near the railway station — budget hotels here are ₹200-300 cheaper than on Mall Road.
- ▸The walk from the Ridge to Jakhoo Temple is free and has good forest views — the ropeway is ₹100 one way.
- ▸Eat at the dhabas near the ISBT bus stand for ₹100-150 meals instead of the tourist cafes on Mall Road.
- ▸The overnight bus from Delhi saves a night in a hotel — book HRTC buses from ISBT Kashmere Gate.
- ▸Visit in September-October for the best balance of weather and prices — the monsoon clears and the autumn light is good.
Safety & permits
