Getting there
Tiruvannamalai is a temple town in Tamil Nadu built around the base of the Arunachala hill, one of the five sacred Shiva elements in Hindu tradition. The Arunachaleswarar temple, one of the largest temple complexes in Tamil Nadu, spreads across the western side of the hill. The town is also the site of the Sri Ramana Maharshi ashram, attracting spiritual seekers from around the world. The main experience in Tiruvannamalai is the Girivalam — a 14 km circumambulation of the Arunachala hill, most popular on full-moon nights when thousands of pilgrims walk the path carrying lamps and chanting. The town is quiet, spiritual and very budget-friendly. It is one of the few places in India where you can attend meditation sessions at a world-famous ashram for free.

Why go
The Arunachaleswarar temple is a massive complex of nine gopurams, pillared halls and sacred tanks built over centuries by the Vijayanagara and Chola dynasties. The main deity is Shiva as a lingam representing fire. The temple is busiest on full-moon nights when pilgrims begin and end the Girivalam here. The Sri Ramana Maharshi ashram, founded by the 20th-century sage Ramana Maharshi, is a peaceful complex with a meditation hall and library. Visitors can attend daily meditation sessions, read in the library and walk in the gardens. The ashram does not charge for any of its activities.
Tiruvannamalai has become a centre for yoga and meditation studies in South India. The Ramana Maharshi ashram offers a calm environment for self-guided meditation. The town has a growing number of yoga shalas and meditation centres run by both Indian and international teachers. The full-moon Girivalam is the central spiritual practice — walking the 14 km path around the hill with thousands of others is a moving experience regardless of your spiritual background. Several guesthouses near the ashram cater to long-term spiritual seekers with monthly rates.
How to reach
Tiruvannamalai has its own railway station with limited direct connections. From Chennai, buses from the Koyambedu bus stand to Tiruvannamalai run frequently and take about 4-5 hours (₹150-300). Once in Tiruvannamalai, the temple, the ashram and the Girivalam path are all within walking distance of the town centre. Budget accommodation is concentrated near the bus stand and the ashram area.

When to go
November to February is the best period. The weather is cool and pleasant for walking. October to March overall is good. The Karthigai Deepam festival in November or December is the major annual event — a huge flame is lit on the top of Arunachala hill and the entire town is decorated with lamps. This is the most dramatic time to experience the Girivalam. April to June is very hot. July to September is monsoon — the hill is green but the walks can be humid. Full-moon nights are the highlight any time of year — the Girivalam is most active on these nights regardless of the season.
Suggested itinerary
Day 1: Arrive and Arunachaleswarar Temple
Arrive in Tiruvannamalai by afternoon. Check into a guesthouse near the ashram or the temple. Visit the Arunachaleswarar temple in the late afternoon — walk through the gopurams and the inner courtyards. Spend the evening at the Ramana Maharshi ashram — the meditation hall is open to all.
Day 2: Full Moon Girivalam
If visiting near a full moon: prepare for the Girivalam in the evening. Start the 14 km walk from the temple around sunset. Carry water and comfortable shoes. The path is lined with stalls selling snacks, lamps and water. The walk takes 3-4 hours at a steady pace. If not a full moon: visit the temple again in the morning and take a shorter walk on the Girivalam path.
Day 3: Asram and Depart
Visit the Ramana Maharshi ashram again in the morning for meditation. Walk to the Virupaksha Cave and the Skandashram on the lower slopes of Arunachala — these are caves where Ramana Maharshi lived. Return to town and depart by bus to Chennai.
Student hacks
- ▸The Ramana Maharshi ashram is free — meditation sessions, library access and the gardens are all open to visitors without charge.
- ▸Ashram guesthouses near the bus stand offer rooms from ₹250-400 per night — the cheapest accommodation in a spiritual town.
- ▸Eat at the small Tamil eateries on the main road for ₹50-100 meals — the ashram also serves free meals at designated times.
- ▸The full-moon Girivalam is free — thousands of pilgrims walk together and the atmosphere is the main attraction.
- ▸Carry a flashlight for the Girivalam on full-moon nights — some sections of the 14 km path are unlit.
Safety & permits
Indian nationals do not need any permit for Tiruvannamalai. The Arunachaleswarar temple is free to enter. The Sri Ramana Maharshi ashram is free and open to all. The Girivalam path is a public walking route. The main safety consideration is the heat — the 14 km walk is long and mostly on paved roads without shade, so carry water and walk in the evening or early morning. On full-moon nights, the path is crowded with pilgrims and the atmosphere is festive but be aware of your belongings in the crowds. ATMs are available in the town centre. The town is very safe and spiritual seekers from around the world visit solo, including women.
