Getting there

Bharatpur is a city in eastern Rajasthan, best known for the Keoladeo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the finest bird sanctuaries in Asia. The park was the duck-hunting reserve of the Bharatpur maharajas and is now a protected wetland that hosts over 370 bird species. Bharatpur was also the capital of the Jat kingdom, and the Lohagarh Fort (Iron Fort) withstood seven British attacks. The city is a popular weekend destination from Delhi (180 km). It is a great destination for student backpackers looking for an affordable trip. The area is well-connected to major Indian cities by road, rail and air. The destination offers a mix of experiences that cater to all kinds of travellers, from solo backpackers to small groups.

Why go

Wildlife

Keoladeo National Park is the main attraction — 29 sq km of wetlands, grasslands and forests, accessible by cycle rickshaw, walking or cycling. The park is famous for migratory birds including Siberian cranes (rare), painted storks, spoonbills, egrets and over 100 species of resident birds. Winter (October-March) is the best season when the park hosts tens of thousands of migratory waterfowl. The park has a watchtower at the centre and a network of dykes that serve as walking trails. Bird guides (₹200-300) are available at the park entrance.

Cultural

Lohagarh Fort is a 18th-century Jat fort with a museum and a small palace inside. The Government Museum in the fort has sculptures and artifacts from the region. The Deeg Palace, 35 km from Bharatpur, is a 18th-century Jat palace with gardens and a water palace.

How to reach

Bharatpur has its own railway station with direct trains from Delhi (Bandikui Junction — change for Bharatpur, or direct via the Agra route). Trains take 4-5 hours (sleeper class ₹200-350). The nearest airport is Agra (50 km) or Delhi (180 km). Buses from Delhi to Bharatpur take 4-5 hours (₹300-400).

When to go

October to March is the birding season. November-February is peak season for migratory birds. The park is open year-round but July-September is monsoon — the wetlands are full of water and breeding resident birds. April-June is hot — fewer birds, cheaper accommodation.

Suggested itinerary

  1. Day 1: Arrive and Keoladeo

Arrive in Bharatpur from Delhi by train. Check into a hotel near the park. Spend the afternoon birding at Keoladeo — take a cycle rickshaw (2-3 hours). Best time is 3-6 PM.

  2. Day 2: Lohagarh and Depart

Visit Lohagarh Fort and the museum in the morning. If time permits, visit Deeg Palace (35 km, ₹100-150 by bus). Catch an evening train back to Delhi.

Student hacks

  • Keoladeo entry is ₹75 for Indians — one of the cheapest UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India.
  • Hire a cycle rickshaw at the park gate (₹200-400 for 2 hours) — the puller doubles as a bird guide.
  • Visit in December-January for the highest concentration of migratory birds.
  • Carry binoculars — the bird-watching is dramatically better with them.

Safety & permits

Indian nationals do not need any permit for Bharatpur or Keoladeo. The park entry fee is ₹75 for Indians. Cycle rickshaws with trained rickshaw-pullers who also serve as bird guides are available at the park gate. The park is safe and well patrolled. ATMs are available in the town.
