Getting there

Bhuj is a town in the Kutch district of Gujarat, the gateway to the white salt desert of the Rann of Kutch. The town was the capital of the Jadeja Rajput rulers and has a palace, a museum and a walled old city rebuilt after the 2001 earthquake. The Rann of Kutch, 80 km from Bhuj, is a vast salt marsh that turns into a white desert in the dry season. The Rann Utsav (November-February) is the main tourist event. Bhuj is also a centre for Kutchi handicrafts — embroidery, bandhani tie-dye and leatherwork. It is a great destination for student backpackers looking for an affordable trip. The area is well-connected to major Indian cities by road, rail and air.

Why go

Cultural

The Aina Mahal (Palace of Mirrors) in Bhuj was built in 1761 with Venetian glass and mirrors. The Prag Mahal next door is a 19th-century palace in Italian Gothic style. The Bhujodi craft village (8 km) has weavers and artisans working on traditional Kutchi embroidery. The Kutch Museum (founded 1877) is the oldest museum in Gujarat. The Dholavira excavation site (a 5,000-year-old Harappan city) is 200 km from Bhuj.

Adventure

The Rann of Kutch salt desert is a surreal landscape — white salt extending to the horizon. The Kala Dungar (Black Hill) is the highest point in Kutch with views of the Rann. The Rann Utsav camp has cultural shows and desert activities. The Kutch desert can be visited by jeep or camel. The Wild Ass Sanctuary near the Little Rann of Kutch has the endangered khur (Indian wild ass).

How to reach

Bhuj has its own railway station with direct trains from Delhi (Bhuj Express, 18-20 hours, sleeper class ₹600-900). The nearest airport is Bhuj, with direct flights from Mumbai. Buses from Ahmedabad to Bhuj take 7-8 hours (₹400-600).

When to go

October to March is the season. The Rann Utsav runs from November to February. For the white desert at its best, visit in December-January when the salt crust is dry and the moonlight creates a magical effect. July-September is monsoon — the Rann is flooded. April-June is very hot (up to 45°C).

Student hacks

  • Bhuj town has budget hotels from ₹500 — much cheaper than the Rann Utsav tents (₹3,000+).
  • Take a shared jeep to the Rann (₹500-1,000 per person) rather than a private taxi.
  • The Aina Mahal entry is ₹50 — the Hall of Mirrors is the best preserved palace interior in Gujarat.
  • Visit the Rann in December during a full moon — the night view is the most surreal experience.
  • Bhujodi village is free to visit — you can see weavers working and buy directly from them.

Safety & permits

Indian nationals do not need any permit for Bhuj or the Rann of Kutch. The Rann is a protected area — certain zones require a forest permit for overnight camping. The border with Pakistan is 30 km from Bhuj — carry photo ID. ATMs are available in Bhuj but not in the Rann area. The salt desert can be disorienting — do not venture without a guide.
