Getting there
Bundi is a town in the Hadoti region of Rajasthan, set in a narrow valley in the Aravalli hills. It was the capital of the Bundi princely state and is known for its blue-painted stepwells, the Bundi Fort with 17th-century murals, and the Taragarh Fort on the hilltop. Bundi is smaller and less visited than Jaipur or Jodhpur, with a quiet, small-town atmosphere. The town's main attractions are the Rani Ki Baori (a 46 m deep stepwell), the Bundi Palace with its murals of court scenes and hunting expeditions, and the walk up to Taragarh Fort. It is a great destination for student backpackers looking for an affordable trip. The area is well-connected to major Indian cities by road, rail and air.

Why go
The Bundi Palace has the most distinctive murals in Rajasthan — 17th-century paintings in the Chitrashala (picture gallery) showing hunting scenes, court life and religious themes. Rani Ki Baori is one of the finest stepwells in Rajasthan — 46 m deep with 200 steps and ornate arches. The Taragarh Fort on the hilltop has a view of the entire town and the surrounding valley. The Nagar Sagar stepwell in the centre of the old town is still in use. The 84-pillared cenotaph complex near the fort has beautiful carvings.
The walk up to Taragarh Fort takes 30-45 minutes and offers a good view of the town and the surrounding Aravalli hills. The Bhimlat waterfall, 30 km from Bundi, is a 50 m waterfall accessible by road — best visited after the monsoon. The Jait Sagar Lake on the edge of the town has a walking path along the shore. The nearby villages of Tonk and Menal have ancient temples and waterfalls.
