Getting there

Jim Corbett National Park is India's oldest national park, established in 1936 as Hailey National Park and renamed after the hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett. It covers 520 sq km in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand, with the Kosi River flowing through its core area. Corbett is one of the best places in India to see tigers in the wild — the park has one of the highest tiger densities in the country. Beyond tigers, the park has elephants, leopards, deer and over 600 species of birds. The park is divided into five zones for tourism — Dhikala and Bijrani are the most popular. The nearest town is Ramnagar, which has accommodation, restaurants and the park entry gate. It is a great destination for student backpackers looking for an affordable trip. The area is well-connected to major Indian cities by road, rail and air.

Why go

Wildlife

The core attraction of Corbett is the tiger safari. Dhikala zone is the largest zone and offers the longest safari routes through grassland and riverine forest. Bijrani zone is known for relatively higher tiger sighting rates. Jhirna zone is open year-round while the other zones close during the monsoon. The Dhikala forest lodge is inside the park and offers an overnight wildlife experience with morning and evening safaris. The park has over 110 recorded tiger individuals and reliable sightings in the Dhikala and Bijrani zones. Elephants are commonly seen along the Kosi River and in the grassland areas. The park has over 600 bird species including crested serpent eagles, kingfishers and ibis.

Leisure

The Kosi River, which runs along the park boundary, has pebbled banks that are good for walking and bird-watching outside the park. The Garjia temple on a large rock in the middle of the Kosi River is a local pilgrimage site. The Corbett Museum in the old bungalow of Jim Corbett in Kaladhungi, 15 km from Ramnagar, has exhibits on his life and the park's history. The river rafting on the Kosi is a short 4 km stretch with Class II-III rapids. The Dhangari museum near the park gate has taxidermy displays.

How to reach

The nearest railway station is Ramnagar, about 1 km from the park gate. Direct trains from Delhi to Ramnagar include the overnight Corbett Park Link Express and the Ranikhet Express (sleeper class ₹250-400, 5-6 hours). Services have been disrupted during COVID but are now restored — check current timings and fares with UTC (utc.uk.gov.in) before travel. The nearest airport is Pantnagar, about 80 km away. From Ramnagar railway station, autos and taxis are available to the safari gate (₹100-200). The park is 260 km from Delhi by road — a 6-hour drive via Haldwani. Ramnagar has good bus connectivity to Delhi, Haldwani and Nainital.

When to go

November to June is the park's tourist season — the park closes for monsoon from July to October. The best period for tiger sightings is April to June when the dry weather brings animals to waterholes. November to February is cooler and the park is lush — birdwatching is excellent. March to June gets progressively hotter but offers the best chances of tiger and elephant sightings. Dhikala zone opens from November to June. Bijrani zone is open from November to June. Jhirna zone is open year-round but tiger sightings are less frequent there. For budget travellers, November-December is the best balance of price and weather.

Suggested itinerary

  1. Day 1: Arrive in Ramnagar

Take the overnight train from Delhi to Ramnagar, arriving early morning. Check into a budget hotel near the park gate. Book the afternoon safari (Bijrani zone recommended for first-time visitors). Evening safari from 2 PM to 5:30 PM. Return to the hotel for dinner.

  2. Day 2: Dhikala Zone Safari

  3. Day 3: Return to Delhi

Visit the Garjia temple in the morning. Board the train from Ramnagar to Delhi or take a bus from Ramnagar.

Student hacks

  • Book safaris on the official Corbett website — third-party agents charge 2-3x the fare.
  • The Dhikala forest lodge is the most affordable way to stay inside the park — dorms from ₹1,500 includes meals and guided safaris.
  • Take the overnight train from Delhi to Ramnagar — sleeper class ₹250 and saves a night in a hotel.
  • Jhirna zone is the only zone open year-round — useful if monsoon season but lower tiger density.
  • Carry binoculars — the park has excellent bird watching even when tiger sightings are low.

Safety & permits

Indian nationals need to book safaris through the official Corbett website. Safari slots are limited and sell out days or weeks in advance — booking at least 2-3 weeks ahead is recommended. The Dhikala forest lodge booking requires an online reservation and opens 45 days in advance. Safari rules: no getting out of the vehicle, no littering, no loud noise. The park has wild elephants and tigers — follow the guide's instructions at all times. Ramnagar has ATMs, petrol pumps and hospitals. The park is safe for solo travellers but a safari is a shared experience — you will be grouped with other visitors in the jeep.
