Kalimpong is a hill station in West Bengal at 1,250 m, 50 km from Darjeeling. It is known as the Orchid Town of the Himalayas for its orchid collection and flower nurseries. Kalimpong is quieter and less touristy than Darjeeling. The town has Buddhist monasteries (Durpin Monastery and Tharpa Choling Monastery), the Deolo Hill (the highest point with a view of Kanchenjunga), and the Kalimpong market (for Tibetan handicrafts). The town was an important stop on the Silk Road between India and Tibet until 1962. It is a great destination for student backpackers looking for an affordable trip. Deolo Hill (1,720 m) is the highest point in Kalimpong — 30 minutes walk from the town centre with a panoramic view of Kanchenjunga and the Teesta Valley. The Durpin Dara Monastery is on a hill with a 14 ft golden Buddha. The Cactus Nursery and Zang Dhok Palri Phodang Monastery are unique attractions.
