Why go
Lighthouse Beach is the most popular — a crescent-shaped bay with gentle waves, beach shacks and the lighthouse that offers a panoramic view of the coastline. Hawah Beach (5 min walk north) is smaller and quieter with a nudist section. Samudra Beach (15 min walk south) is quieter and has a fishing village. The beaches are safe for swimming in calm weather. The sunset from the lighthouse is a must.
Kovalam is a major Ayurvedic destination. The Keralan Ayurvedic massages (₹500-1,000 for a 1-hour massage) are available at dozens of centres. The yoga classes (₹200-500 per session) are offered at beachside studios. The Vijaya Beach Park has a swimming pool. The Veli Lagoon (10 km) is a calm backwater with boat rides.
