Getting there
Yuksom is a small village in West Sikkim that serves as the main starting point for treks into the Kanchenjunga region — particularly Goecha La, one of India's most spectacular high-altitude treks. At 1,780 m, Yuksom sits in a valley surrounded by cardamom and paddy fields. It was the first capital of Sikkim, and the Norbugang throne where the first Chogyal (king) was crowned in 1642 is a short walk from the village. The Dubdi Monastery is one of the oldest in Sikkim. Yuksom itself is quiet, with a handful of homestays and trekking agencies. The atmosphere is one of preparation and return — trekkers gather here, arrange gear and permits, and head into the hills. It is not a place for sightseeing but for beginning a journey.

Why go
The Goecha La trek is the main reason to come to Yuksom. The trail goes through the Khangchendzonga National Park, past alpine lakes and glaciers, and reaches Goecha La pass at 4,940 m, offering a direct frontal view of the Kanchenjunga south face. The trek takes 10-12 days round trip and requires a registered guide and permit. For shorter adventures, the trek to Dzongri (4,030 m) takes 4-5 days and offers views of the same mountains without the full Goecha La commitment. The trekking season is limited to March-May and October-November. In the monsoon months, the trails are slippery and leeches are a problem.
Yuksom has historical significance beyond its role as a trek base. The Norbugang coronation throne — a stone platform under a large pine tree — is where Phuntsog Namgyal was crowned the first Chogyal of Sikkim in 1642. The site also has a small prayer hall and is considered sacred. Dubdi Monastery, a 20-minute uphill walk from the village, was built in 1701 and is one of the oldest surviving monasteries in Sikkim. Khecheopalri Lake, a 90-minute drive from Yuksom, is a sacred lake shaped like a footprint that is worshipped by both Buddhists and Hindus as a wish-fulfilling site.
How to reach
Yuksom is about 150 km from New Jalpaiguri. Take a train from Delhi to NJP (sleeper class ₹500-700, 12-14 hours), then a shared jeep from NJP to Yuksom — this is a two-leg journey via Gangtok or via Jorethang. The more reliable route is NJP to Jorethang (₹300-500, 4 hours), then a shared jeep from Jorethang to Yuksom (₹200-300, 2 hours). Check live timings on IRCTC or a train app before booking. The nearest airport is Bagdogra, 160 km away, with similar road access to Yuksom via Jorethang. Yuksom village is walkable — most homestays and trekking offices are along the main road through the village.

When to go
March to May is the primary trekking season. The weather is stable, the rhododendrons are in bloom, and the mountain views are clear. October to November is the second trekking window with crisp air and excellent visibility. December to February is too cold for high-altitude trekking — the passes are snowed in and most guides are not operating. June to September is monsoon — the valley around Yuksom is lush but the trails at higher altitudes are wet, slippery and leech-infested. The Khecheopalri Lake is best visited in the post-monsoon period (October-November) when the water is clear and the surrounding forest is green.
Suggested itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Yuksom and Permits
Arrive in Yuksom from NJP or Gangtok by afternoon. Check into a homestay. Visit the Norbugang coronation throne and the Dubdi Monastery in the evening. Meet with a trekking agency to arrange your Goecha La or Dzongri trek — permits need 1-2 days for processing.
Day 2: Trek Preparation
Use this day to confirm your trek arrangements, rent any missing gear (sleeping bag, trekking poles, gaiters), and pack. If you have time, take a day hike to Khecheopalri Lake — a 90-minute drive from Yuksom through cardamom and ginger plantations.
Student hacks
- ▸Carry cash from Gangtok or Jorethang — there are no ATMs in Yuksom.
- ▸Trek gear (sleeping bags, poles) can be rented in Yuksom for ₹100-200 per day — cheaper than buying for a single trek.
- ▸Join a group of 4-6 trekkers at your homestay to split guide and porter costs for Goecha La.
- ▸The Dzongri trek (4-5 days) is a shorter and cheaper alternative to the full Goecha La trek (10-12 days).
- ▸Book your guide through a registered Sikkim Trekking Association member — unregistered guides may not get you the permit.
Safety & permits
All treks starting from Yuksom require a permit from the Sikkim Forest Department and a registered guide. Permits are arranged by trekking agencies in Yuksom and require 1-2 days processing. Budget roughly ₹700 per Indian trekker in park fees, paid at the forest check-post in Yuksom, plus police registration — trekking agencies bundle all of it into their packages. Indian nationals can trek with a guide and the permit; foreign nationals need additional permits. Altitude sickness is a real concern on the Goecha La trek — the camps at Lamuney and Samiti Lake are above 4,300 m. Proper acclimatisation is built into the trek itinerary. ATMs are not available in Yuksom — carry cash from Gangtok or from Jorethang. Mobile network is limited to BSNL.
