Permits & reaching base
Forest camping permit via a registered operator; Roopkund was effectively closed 2018 to 2026 by the bugyal camping ban, lifted by the Supreme Court on 20 July 2026, so confirm Bedni and Bhagwabasa camping is being permitted before booking.
Base: Lohajung. Take the train to Kathgodam or Rishikesh, then drive via Karnaprayag, Tharali and Deval to Lohajung in 9 to 11 hours. Walk from Lohajung through Didna and the bugyals to Roopkund and descend back to Lohajung via Wan.
Key waypoints are verified against published sources; remote camps are operator-reported positions. The line is schematic, not a surveyed GPS track. Trails shift with weather — carry your operator's current GPS track, a registered guide and all permits.
