Getting there
Manali sits at the head of the Kullu Valley in Himachal Pradesh, surrounded by deodar forests and snow-fed rivers. It is one of India's most popular hill stations, which means it can get crowded, but the town has enough variety to justify the hype. Old Manali across the river is where the travellers and backpackers cluster — narrow lanes lined with stone cottages, riverside cafes and hostels tucked into apple orchards. New Manali has the bus stand, markets and budget hotels. The main draws are the Solang Valley for paragliding and skiing, the Beas River for rafting, and the views from the Rohtang Pass or the newer Atal Tunnel that opens up Lahaul and Spiti. Vashisht village, just outside town, has a hot-spring temple worth a visit. Manali works well as a base for longer adventures into the higher ranges.

Why go
Solang Valley, 14 km from Manali, is the adventure hub in all seasons. In summer you can paraglide, zorb and ride the cable car. In winter the same slopes turn into a ski area with basic lifts and equipment rental. River rafting on the Beas starts near Pirdi, about 20 km before Manali, with rapids at Grade II to III in the spring melt. The Atal Tunnel now gives year-round road access to Sissu and the Lahaul Valley, making day trips to areas that were previously cut off for half the year possible. For trekking, the Hampta Pass, Bhrigu Lake and Chandrakhani Pass trails start from the Manali region.
Old Manali has a cafe culture that rivals any in Himachal. Riverside seating, Israeli and Italian menus, and a relaxed pace define the area. You can spend entire days reading by the Beas or walking through the orchard lanes of Manu Temple Road. Vashisht village, a short auto ride away, has a natural hot spring inside a temple complex — free to use and open till evening. The Hadimba Devi temple, set in a deodar forest on the edge of town, is a peaceful spot for an afternoon walk. If you want to step away from the crowds entirely, the hamlet of Sethan, an hour's walk above Old Manali, offers quiet mountain views.
How to reach
The Volvo bus from Delhi is the standard route for most travellers. HRTC and private operators run overnight Volvo buses from ISBT Kashmere Gate to Manali, taking about 14 hours and costing ₹1,000-1,500. Ordinary HRTC buses are cheaper at ₹700-1,000 but less comfortable. Check current timings and fares on the HRTC website or app. The nearest airport is Bhuntar (Kullu-Manali), about 50 km away, with flights from Delhi under ₹5,000. The nearest major railhead is Chandigarh, 310 km away. From Chandigarh, HRTC and private buses run frequently to Manali, taking 8-9 hours and costing ₹400-700. Once in Manali, local buses and shared taxis cover Solang, Vashisht and Old Manali.

When to go
March to June is the main tourist season. The weather is pleasant, Solang Valley is green, and river rafting is operating on the Beas. July to September is monsoon — expect rain and occasional landslides on the Chandigarh-Manali highway. October to November is the cleanest season for mountain views and is excellent for trekking. December to February is winter. Snowfall is common, temperatures drop below freezing at night, and Solang becomes a ski destination. The Atal Tunnel has made winter travel to Lahaul possible, but the Rohtang Pass road closes by November and reopens in May.
Suggested itinerary
Day 1: Old Manali and Vashisht
Arrive from Delhi by bus in the morning. Check into a hostel in Old Manali. Spend the morning exploring the lanes and riverside cafes. Walk to Vashisht village in the afternoon — visit the temple with the hot spring and soak your feet. Return to Old Manali for an early dinner at one of the riverside places.
Day 2: Solang Valley Adventure
Take a shared taxi or local bus from Manali bus stand to Solang Valley (₹100-150 per person, 40 minutes). Spend the morning on paragliding or the cable car ride. In summer, you can also try zorbing. Return to Manali by afternoon. Visit Hadimba Devi temple in the deodar forest on the way back.
Day 3: Atal Tunnel to Sissu
Take a shared taxi or local bus through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu in Lahaul Valley (about ₹200-300 per person, 1 hour each way). The landscape changes dramatically — dry, barren mountains instead of the green Kullu Valley. Visit Sissu waterfall and return by afternoon. Pack for your overnight bus back to Delhi in the evening.
Student hacks
- ▸The Volvo overnight bus from Delhi to Manali costs ₹1,000-1,500 — book at ISBT Kashmere Gate or via the HRTC app to avoid agent fees.
- ▸Old Manali hostels cost ₹400-600 per night and include kitchen access — cheaper than New Manali for the same quality.
- ▸Paragliding at Solang costs ₹600-1,000 — negotiate in the off-season and avoid operators inside the paid parking area who charge more.
- ▸Vashisht hot spring is free — carry a towel and change of clothes as there are no changing rooms nearby.
- ▸Group up with hostel mates to share a taxi to Solang or Sissu — solo auto fares are much higher per person.
Safety & permits
Indian nationals do not need permits for Manali, Solang Valley, or the Atal Tunnel route. Visiting the Rohtang Pass itself needs a sightseeing e-permit from rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in (₹550 per vehicle, daily quota of 1,200 vehicles — book ahead in season). Transit towards Lahaul and Spiti goes through the Atal Tunnel instead: no Rohtang permit, though private vehicles register on the e-Aagman portal for Lahaul entry. The Beas River is fast and cold — swimming is not safe in most sections. Paragliding and rafting operators are regulated but quality varies — choose operators who show valid licences. Old Manali is safe to walk around at night, but carry a torch for unlit lanes. ATMs are plentiful in New Manali but may run low on cash during peak weekends.
