Getting there
Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan is one of the best places in India to see wild tigers. The park covers 1,330 sq km of dry deciduous forest around a 10th-century fort, with the Chambal River on one side and the Aravalli hills on the other. The tiger sightings here are reliable, especially in the summer when the animals are drawn to the lakes inside the park. The park is divided into zones, with zones 1-4 being the most popular for safaris. Ranthambore is also one of the more accessible parks for budget travellers — the town of Sawai Madhopur sits right at the park boundary with cheap guesthouses and direct trains from Delhi and Mumbai. The park is closed from July to September for the monsoon.

Why go
Ranthambore has consistently high tiger sighting odds compared to other Indian parks. The tigers are relatively habituated to vehicles and can often be seen at the lakes and waterholes, especially in the dry months. The park also has leopards, sloth bears, striped hyenas, marsh crocodiles and over 300 species of birds. The canter safaris — large open buses — are the budget option at about ₹700-1,000 per person. Private gypsy safaris cost more but offer a more flexible and personalised experience. Booking through the official Rajasthan forest department website is cheaper than going through a reseller or hotel.
How to reach
Sawai Madhopur railway station is on the Delhi-Mumbai mainline with frequent direct trains. The train from Delhi to Sawai Madhopur takes about 4 hours (sleeper class ₹200-300). Check live timings on IRCTC or a train app before booking. Buses from Delhi ISBT to Sawai Madhopur take about 6-7 hours (₹400-600). The nearest airport is Jaipur, about 180 km away, with flights from Delhi under ₹4,000. From the railway station, the park entrance and the main accommodation area are a ₹100 auto ride away. Sawai Madhopur town is walkable and small enough to get around on foot.

When to go
October to March is the main safari season when the weather is pleasant. Tiger sightings are good, though the vegetation is thicker. April to June is the best time for tiger sightings — the heat forces animals to gather at waterholes, making them easier to spot. Daytime temperatures in summer cross 40°C, so morning safaris are more comfortable than afternoon ones. The park is closed entirely from July to September for the monsoon. November to February is the most comfortable for travellers, but the thicker vegetation can make tiger spotting slightly harder than in summer.
Suggested itinerary
Day 1: Arrive and Afternoon Safari
Arrive in Sawai Madhopur by morning train. Check into a hotel or hostel near the park entrance. Take the afternoon safari (2:30-5:30 PM) — afternoons are good for tiger sightings around the lakes. Return to town for dinner.
Day 2: Morning Safari and Ranthambore Fort
Take the morning safari (6-10 AM) — morning light is best for photography and animals are active after the night. After the safari, visit the Ranthambore Fort inside the park — the fort has a series of lakes and temples within its walls. The fort can be visited separately from the safari. Rest in the afternoon.
Day 3: Second Safari or Depart
If you have time and budget, book a second safari in a different zone. Otherwise, explore the town, visit the nearby Trinetra Ganesh temple, or catch a train back to Delhi or onward to Jaipur.
Student hacks
- ▸Book canter safaris on the official Rajasthan forest website — they cost ₹700-1,000 compared to ₹2,000-3,000 from resellers.
- ▸Zone 1 and Zone 3 have the highest tiger sighting odds — book these zones if they are available when you reserve online.
- ▸Stay in Sawai Madhopur town near the railway station — budget guesthouses start at ₹400 and most arrange safari bookings.
- ▸The morning safari (6-10 AM) has better tiger activity and better light than the afternoon one.
- ▸Carry your own binoculars if possible — rental pairs at the park entrance are of poor quality.
Safety & permits
Indian nationals do not need a special permit beyond the safari booking. Safari slots must be booked online through the Rajasthan Forest Department's official portal, obms-tourist.rajasthan.gov.in (also linked from forest.rajasthan.gov.in under safari booking). Each safari lasts 3-4 hours, either in the morning (6-10 AM) or afternoon (2:30-5:30 PM). Canter safaris seat about 20 people and are cheaper. Gypsy safaris seat 6 and cost more per person but offer better photo opportunities. The park is secure inside the safari vehicles — follow the guide's instructions. Sawai Madhopur town has ATMs and good mobile network.
